ChatGPT prompts for researching trading cards
Copy any of these straight into ChatGPT. They are grouped by what you are trying to find out — what a card is worth, whether an asking price is fair, how scarce a grade really is, and whether a card is worth submitting. Prompts marked "no setup" work on any card cold. The ones marked "your cards" read your own collection, so they need you signed in. All of them assume the CardChain AI app is added in ChatGPT, which is what lets it look a card up rather than recall one.
Pricing a card (no setup)
Name the parallel and the grade if you know them. "A Herbert rookie" describes a base card and dozens of parallels that trade at wildly different numbers, so the more specific the prompt, the more specific the answer.
- What's a 2023 Bowman Chrome Victor Wembanyama auto worth?
- Price a 2020 Prizm Silver Justin Herbert rookie in PSA 10.
- What does this card sell for raw versus PSA 9 versus PSA 10?
- Show me the 30-day trend on a 2018 Prizm Luka Doncic base.
- Is this card up or down over the last month?
- What's the spread between a BGS 9.5 and a PSA 10 on this card?
- Which parallel of this card is the one people actually pay for?
Checking whether a price is a deal (no setup)
This is the prompt shape that saves money, because it forces the comparison against the exact version in front of you rather than against the card in general.
- Is $180 a good price for a PSA 9 2018 Prizm Luka?
- I'm looking at this card for $240. Is that over or under market?
- What would a fair price be on this card right now?
- At what price does this card become a buy?
- This listing says PSA 10. What do recent PSA 10s actually sell for?
- Am I overpaying if I buy this today?
Reading population (no setup)
Population is the supply side of the price, and it is the number most people check last. It is what tells you whether a grade premium is real or about to evaporate.
- What's the PSA 10 population on a 2003 Topps Chrome LeBron rookie?
- How many BGS 9.5s exist of this card?
- Compare the PSA and SGC populations on this card.
- Is a 10 actually scarce on this card, or does it grade easily?
- Given the population, is the PSA 10 premium here justified?
Deciding whether to grade (no setup)
- Should I grade my 2018 Prizm Luka Doncic rookie?
- Is it worth grading this if I expect a PSA 9 rather than a 10?
- Run the grading math on this card including submission cost.
- What grade does this card need to hit for grading to pay?
- Talk me out of grading this card.
Identifying a card from a photo (no setup)
Send the picture into the conversation and ask. Getting the parallel right is the hard half of pricing, and a photo settles it faster than describing it.
- What card is this? [attach a photo]
- Identify this card and tell me what it's worth.
- Is this the base version or a parallel?
- Identify this and tell me whether it's worth grading.
Your own collection (signed in)
These read your actual portfolio — the same one the iOS and Android apps show — so they only work once you have signed in to CardChain.
- What's my collection worth right now?
- Show me my portfolio sorted by value.
- Which cards in my portfolio are worth grading?
- What are my biggest gainers this month?
- Add a 2020 Prizm Justin Herbert rookie, I paid $40.
- Which of my cards have lost the most value?
- What did I pay for this card versus what it's worth now?
Researching the player behind the card (no setup)
- How is Paul Skenes trending right now?
- Is this player's card market heating up or cooling off?
- What's driving the price movement on this player?
Prompts that will not work well
Worth knowing where the edges are, so you do not mistake a confident answer for a researched one.
- "Should I invest in cards?" — it returns market data, not investment advice, and it will decline the call.
- Anything about Pokémon, Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh! or One Piece. The catalogue is sports cards.
- "Buy this for me." It will show you listings; you complete the purchase yourself.
- Asking without adding the app. ChatGPT will still answer, from memory, with no date on the number — which is the whole problem this fixes.
Questions
Do these prompts work in plain ChatGPT?
Some will produce an answer, but it will come from training data — a remembered price with no date attached, and no distinction between a base card and its parallels. Add the CardChain AI app in ChatGPT and the same prompts run live lookups instead.
How do I add CardChain to ChatGPT?
Search for CardChain AI in ChatGPT's app directory, tap Try in chat, and sign in to CardChain once. About two minutes, no browser extension, and it finishes on a phone.
Do the prompts work in Claude?
Yes. The same account and the same tools work through the Claude connector, and your collection is shared across both.
Is it free?
Yes. Free to start, with no credit card. Search any card, see real-time pricing and population, and run the should-I-grade math without paying anything. Pro is for power users.
