How to use Claude for trading cards
Claude is genuinely useful for trading cards once it can reach live market data, and unreliable before that — on its own it answers price questions from training data, which in a market that reprices weekly means a confident number that was true at some point in the past. What Claude gets wrong on its own
Ask an unconnected assistant what a card is worth and you will get a number, delivered with the same confidence as a correct one. It is not being evasive — it genuinely has an impression of that card's value, formed from whatever its training data contained. The problem is that card prices move on injuries, playoff runs, print runs and grading pool shifts, and an impression has no date attached.
The tell is what is missing. A live lookup can say what a card is worth now and what it did over the last thirty days. A recalled answer cannot, so it does not offer one — and the absence is easy to miss when the prose reads well.
The second failure is subtler and costs more: parallels. "A 2020 Prizm Justin Herbert rookie" describes a base card and about forty parallels with wildly different values, and an unconnected model will happily quote one number for all of them.
Connecting live data to Claude
- Open connector settings in ClaudeOn claude.ai, in the desktop app, or on mobile, go to Settings → Connectors → Add custom connector.
- Paste the CardChain server URLUse https://api.cardchain.ai/mcp/claude exactly, with no trailing space. That is MCP over Streamable HTTP; Claude handles the rest.

Questions that return something useful
Once it is connected, the useful questions change shape. Instead of asking for a number, ask for a decision — the tools return the figures either way, and a decision-shaped question gets the population and the costs pulled in alongside the price.
- Name the parallel and the grade. "2020 Prizm Silver Herbert RC, PSA 10" resolves to one card; "Herbert rookie" does not.
- Ask for the grading verdict, not the graded price — should_i_grade subtracts the submission cost and reads the population before answering.
- Follow up on population when a premium looks too good. A wide PSA 10 premium with a huge 10 population is telling you something.
- Ask about your own collection once a few cards are in it: what is it worth, what moved, what is worth grading.
- Send a photo rather than describing a card. Identification from an image is more reliable than your description of the parallel.
How the grading ROI is actually computed
Most "should I grade this" answers are a general-purpose model reasoning from whatever it remembers about card prices. That reads fluently and is worth nothing, because the decision turns on four numbers that change weekly and are specific to one card: what the raw copy sells for, what it sells for at each grade, what the submission costs, and how often that card actually comes back at the grade you are hoping for.
CardChain computes before it explains. should_i_grade reads the current raw value and the graded value at each grade level for that exact card and parallel, subtracts the submission cost, and puts the result next to the real population from PSA, BGS and SGC — so the fourth number, the odds, comes from how many copies have already been graded at each level rather than from optimism. What comes back is a verdict with the figures behind it.
That last part is the piece a plain price feed cannot do. A card whose PSA 10 sells for four times raw is still a bad submission if the population says nine out of ten copies come back a 9.
It knows what you own
A connector that can only look cards up is answering a question anyone could ask. The questions collectors actually have are about their own cards: what is my collection worth now, which of these is worth grading, what did I pay for this.
